A subscription platform that helps New Zealand landlords assess, evidence, and prove compliance with the five Healthy Homes Standards.

The Challenge

Since July 2025, every NZ rental must meet the five Healthy Homes Standards. The rules are complex - requirements shift with a property's climate zone, age, consent history, and construction, and have changed across several regulation versions. Landlords are the legal decision-makers but are left interpreting dense PDFs and scattering their evidence across camera rolls and Dropbox. The harder problem isn't meeting the standards - it's proving it: tenants can request records, and the Tenancy Tribunal can demand them on ten working days' notice, with damages up to $7,200 per breach.

Our Solution

We built HealthyHomes HQ on Laravel, with a purpose-built rules engine at its core that encodes the actual regulations - every formula, threshold, exemption, and dated variation. A landlord answers plain-language questions; the platform works out what their property requires, captures photo evidence against each requirement, and generates a signed compliance statement. The engine is deterministic and date-aware, so historical tenancies evaluate against the rules in force at the time. A companion marketing site explains the standards, ranks for landlord searches, and drives trial sign-ups.

The Results

A feature-complete compliance product that runs the full landlord journey end to end - assess, evidence, sign, store, and produce records on demand. Its core is a rules engine validated by 300+ automated tests, so every compliance finding is proven against each version of the regulations it has to honour. The result is a genuinely complex regulatory domain turned into a tool a landlord can confidently work through - backed by complete billing, agency white-labelling, an admin console, and a marketing site built to compound in search over time.
